It's the question we hear more than any other: "Do I need a whole-house system, or just a filter under the kitchen sink?" Both are good options. They just solve different problems — and once you see the difference, choosing is easy.

The core difference: point-of-entry vs point-of-use

  • A whole-house filter installs where water enters your home (point-of-entry). Everything downstream — every faucet, shower, toilet, washing machine, and water heater — gets filtered water.
  • An under-sink filter installs at one location (point-of-use), almost always the kitchen. It treats only the water at that tap.

Neither is "better." They're aimed at different goals.

What a whole-house system does well

A whole-house filtration system is about protecting your entire home and everything in it:

  • Chlorine, taste, and odor removed from every tap — no chlorine smell in the shower, better-tasting water everywhere.
  • Sediment captured before it reaches your appliances, so it doesn't accumulate in your water heater, washing machine, or fixtures.
  • Appliance and plumbing protection across the whole house, which matters a lot in Baja where sediment and hard water are common.
  • On the premium tiers, PFAS and heavy-metal reduction using KS carbon media.

What it doesn't do: a whole-house carbon filter is not the same as reverse osmosis. It dramatically improves your water, but it doesn't strip dissolved solids down to bottled-water purity.

What an under-sink system does well

An under-sink unit — in Baja, almost always a reverse osmosis system — is about drinking-water purity at one tap:

  • Pushes water through a semipermeable membrane that removes dissolved solids (TDS), heavy metals, and many chemicals.
  • Produces high-purity water for drinking, cooking, coffee, and ice, from a dedicated faucet.
  • Replaces the garrafón routine with unlimited filtered water at the kitchen.

What it doesn't do: nothing for your showers, laundry, water heater, or the sediment and chlorine reaching the rest of the house. It's a drinking-water solution, not a home-protection solution.

So which do you need?

Here's the honest decision framework:

  • "I just want clean, great-tasting drinking water and I'm renting." → Under-sink RO (or garrafones). You don't need whole-house treatment for one faucet.
  • "My showers smell like chlorine, my appliances are scaling up, and there's sediment in the water." → Whole-house filtration. That's a whole-home problem, and point-of-use won't touch it.
  • "I own my home and I want the complete solution." → Both. A whole-house filter for every tap and appliance, plus RO at the kitchen for drinking. Each does what it does best, and together they cover everything.

Don't forget hardness and bacteria

Two things filters alone don't fully address:

  • Hard water (high calcium and magnesium) is a scale problem, best handled by a dedicated water softener.
