Why UV matters specifically in Baja

- UV is one layer, not the whole system. For hardness you still need a water softener; for drinking-water purity you still want reverse osmosis. UV handles the microbial layer.
When to replace the UV lamp — the step people miss
Here's the maintenance detail that trips up almost everyone: a UV lamp does not last forever, and it does not stop glowing when it stops working.
Most manufacturers rate UV lamps for about 9,000 hours — roughly 12 months of continuous use. After that, the lamp still lights up, but its disinfecting UV-C output has degraded below an effective level. Because the visible glow fades much more slowly than the invisible UV-C output, a lamp can look fine long after it has quietly stopped protecting you.
So the rule is simple:
- Replace the UV lamp about once a year, on a schedule, regardless of whether it still glows.
- Clean the quartz sleeve periodically — mineral scale or film on the sleeve blocks UV light just like cloudy water does.
Skipping the annual lamp change is the most common reason a UV system silently underperforms.
