Is Mexican Tap Water Safe for Dogs?
Your dog probably drinks from the tap, the pool, and puddles. Here is what actually matters in Baja, and when it is worth doing something about it.
Most dogs here drink tap water and are fine. Some are not, and the ones that are not tend to be the new arrivals.
If you have just moved down with a dog that has spent its life drinking treated municipal water in the US or Canada, its gut has never met what is in a Baja tinaco. The same is true of you, which is why people talk about getting sick in their first weeks and then never again.
What actually causes the problem
It is bacteria and protozoa, and the usual sources are not the city treatment plant. They are the storage chain.
Water sits in your pila, then in the tinaco on your roof. A rooftop plastic tank in Baja sun is warm, sometimes has a loose or broken lid, and often has not been cleaned in years. Bacteria grow. Sediment settles. Birds and insects get in.
Dogs drink more water per kilo of body weight than people do, and they drink from whatever is available. If the water is a problem, they meet more of it than you do.
The signs worth paying attention to
Loose stools that come and go with no diet change. Vomiting without an obvious cause. A dog that seems fine but is drinking noticeably more than usual. Any of that, and the water is worth ruling out along with everything else.

The chlorine question
Some people worry about chlorine in the tap water hurting their dog. Municipal chlorination levels are low and dogs handle them, but chlorine does affect taste and smell, and dogs have far better noses than we do. A dog that sniffs its bowl and walks away is often reacting to that rather than to anything harmful.
Carbon filtration removes chlorine. That is usually why a dog that ignored the bowl starts drinking normally after a system goes in.
What people here actually do
Some fill the dog bowl from a garrafón, which works and is one more jug to buy. Some boil water for the dog, which kills bacteria but concentrates minerals and is a daily chore. Most just use the tap and hope.
If the house has whole-house filtration with UV, the bowl is filled from the tap and it is the same water as everywhere else in the house. That is the simplest version and it is the one that survives a busy week.
