What Is the White Residue on My Dishes and Shower Door?

Spots on glasses, film on the shower door, chalk around the faucet. It is all the same thing, and it is doing more damage than you can see.

It is scale. Dissolved calcium and magnesium left behind when the water evaporates.

Every glass you take out of the dishwasher with spots on it, the film on the shower door that comes back two days after you clean it, the chalky crust around the base of the faucet, the crust inside the kettle. Same substance, same cause.

Why it appears here and not where you came from

Baja water is hard. When water sits on a surface and evaporates, the water leaves and the minerals stay. On glass it looks like spots. On tile it looks like film. Inside a pipe or a water heater, it looks like nothing at all, because you cannot see it.

That last one is the part worth caring about.

What it is doing where you cannot see it

Scale builds up on the heating element of your water heater. It insulates the element from the water, so the heater works harder and longer for the same hot shower. Efficiency drops, the element runs hotter, and it fails earlier than it should.

The same thing happens in a washing machine, a dishwasher, an ice maker, and a coffee machine. Anything that heats water and anything with small passages for water to move through.

Most people here replace an appliance early and put it down to bad luck or cheap manufacturing. Often it is the water.

Why cleaning it is a losing game

Vinegar and the descaling products in every supermarket work. They dissolve the deposit. Then the next glass of water evaporates and it starts again.

You can clean scale forever or you can remove the mineral that causes it. There is no third option that involves cleaning less.

What actually removes it

A water softener. It runs the water through resin that swaps the calcium and magnesium for sodium, which does not form scale. That is the whole mechanism.

What it does not do is reduce total dissolved solids or remove salt. If your problem is that the water tastes salty or the TDS reading is high, that is reverse osmosis, not softening, and it matters in areas near the coast where seawater has worked into the aquifer.

A whole-house filter does not touch hardness either. It handles chlorine, sediment and, with UV, bacteria. Useful, and it will not stop the spots.

What you actually notice afterwards

Glasses come out clear. The shower door stops filming. Soap lathers properly and you use less of it. And the thing you do not notice, which is the water heater lasting the way it was supposed to.
